Meeting Notes

Mission Statement:  To promote the development and provision of trauma-informed services in San Diego County’s agencies and systems through collaboration, advocacy and education to achieve transformation.

I. Present:

II. Agency Overview and Trauma Informed Journey Presentation

Christie’s Place  http://www.christiesplace.org/- 17 employees now (grown from 11); 2000 clients who are impacted family members/300 are HIV positive

Provides social services for women, children, and families affected by HIV, case management and linkage to care

Our mission is to empower our clients to take charge of their health and well-being. Transforming lives since 1996, we are the only organization in San Diego whose mission is dedicated to serving women, children and families infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

History: Our namesake was Christie Milton-Torres (San Diego). Christie’s Place was founded to address the needs of women and families within a predominantly male-centered service field.   It started out very grassroots and continues to have a strong volunteer and  peer-based model.

2012: Services: Ryan White Act/AIDS United, ACA = Mental Health Services for connections between violence, trauma, abuse and HIV, medical case management, outpatient drug services, HIV Counseling and testing, supportive case management, childcare at appts, empowerment and leadership, Sisterhood and Lotus Training for peer advocates, allies, and promotoras/community liaison (volunteers) to spread awareness/policy/advocacy, Peer Navigators (full time) helping to navigate the health care system, newly diagnosed, other co-occurring conditions (substance use, homelessness)

2013: Invited to participate in pilot from Office of Women’s Health – 2 day training. Public Health Response to Trauma (San Francisco)- created post-training action steps; Clinical Director, Peer Navigators, Case Managers, and support staff to champion effort; doing the work and having the language.

Formed Trauma-Informed Task Force under Cultural Competency, support of Management, created environmental assessment and staff competency assessment; provided in Spanish – survey monkey/anonymously EVERY 12 months (3 times)

  • ·        Staff Training Plan – Yearlong – to address key points, Training Manual w/7 modules
  • ·        Focus Groups with staff and clients
  • ·        Various assessments in Change for Woman program – IPV and Mental Health, expand to all clients

Responses from Staff

  • ·        Need for ensuring that we keep the warmth that makes Christie’s Place greati.e. hugging clients when they come in the door
  • ·        At the beginning, staff didn’t understand. What are these words? I do my work well. Focus groups to get concerns out. Committee meets monthly – informal conversations with staff to explore trauma-informed care and it looks different for everybody
  • ·        Referred through medical provider, street outreach w/ PATH; expanded HIV testing through community clinics/County clinics;

III. Announcement/Achievements

  • ·        Will share 2009 Progress next meeting
  • ·        Reorganizing Strategic Plan - 2015 will roll under core competencies
  • ·        BHETA – Cultural Competency training for African American & Native American
  • ·        SDYS – Agency led - Yoga had challenges; employee led - Staff appreciation event; connection/networking/sharing; volunteer to start 10 meet up groups in March – 7 in physical health and well-being; 3 non-physical health (working parents, book club, foodies); interfacing with staff from other offices, include in Workplace Wellness Newsletter
  • ·        BHETA – FitBit Group; Hiking club; knitting/crafting; Support from Management
  • ·        Chadwick Center – Media Event for 2000 pinwheels, to represent Child Abuse in Hospital; Tough Love Documentary through the birth parent’s perspectives – to engage birth parents; hosted screening at theater & brought in director for Q&A; presented trauma-informed; positive depiction of foster parents
  • ·        San Diego Center for Children – Birth Parent attends training presentations
  • ·        SDYS Appeal Grievance
  • ·        Public Health Services, County Nutrition Program – Bevelynn Bravo (from Mothers With A Message, Family & Youth Roundtable) invited by County to share her story, community support, role eating well and exercise to promote mental health, well-being, and healing after her son was killed. Important to hear the voice of the community in creating programs.
