United Kingdom ACEs Connection

We come from all different sectors, walks of life and parts of the United Kingdom to prevent ACEs, and to change systems to become self-healing and to stop traumatizing already traumatized people.

The Repair of Early Trauma: A Bottom Up Approach

Told to us through the voices of children, this unique animation teaches us that by putting together the seven-piece jigsaw puzzle of 'Developmental Trauma', we can understand how a child’s adverse childhood experiences have shaped their emotional world and outward behaviour. Once we understand this, we can then work with a child to help them with their developmental trauma using an innovative therapeutic approach called the ‘Neuro-Sequential Model of Therapeutics’. This model recovers and...

Estimating the costs of child sexual abuse in the UK

This report attempts to calculate the overall costs of child sexual abuse in the UK. It estimates that child sexual abuse cost £3.2bn in 2012. It uses research literature to calculate the number of victims who are affected by the different issues, and uses published current costs for the service provision. It sets out the assumptions that have been made, the costs that have been excluded from the calculations, and the limitations of the available data. ...

A dedicated mental health service has been set up to help people affected by the 22 May 2017 terror attack on Manchester Arena. The Manchester Resilience Hub run by the NHS will support anyone who may be struggling with their mental or emotional wellbeing following the traumatic events in which 22 people died and many more injured. From helping the very young who may have been directly affected by the incident, to family members and emergency professionals involved in the response to the...

ACES in Blackburn with Darwen

A Blackburn with Darwen study found that almost half (47%) of adults across the Borough have suffered at least one ACE, with 12% of adults in Blackburn with Darwen having suffered four or more ACEs. The study has shown that the more ACEs individuals experience in childhood, the greater their risk of a wide range of health-harming behaviours and diseases as an adult. The ACE animation below tells the story of a young boy growing up, and how his experience with ACEs could affect his life...

Two new community-based custody units for women will be located in Glasgow and either Fife or Dundee. The new units will focus on recovery and keeping women closer to their families. A smaller prison will also be built at Cornton Vale for...

From across the water, the Irish Sea

Thank you for adding me. I'm looking forward to your exchanges, especially as Ireland is a lonely place when it comes to ACEs and all-things Children. I will endeavour to not lower the tone too much with never-ending news and stories from my side. Suffice to say that a momentous report was released only a week ago, and for the first time it seems, the tone of the Rapporteur is 'angry' and speaks about a < societal change is required > and not just at the level of the groups and...

Schools' role in tackling bad childhood experiences [BBC.com]

As a teenager he was sleeping in a park and trying to wash his clothes in a river so he would be clean for school. Matthew Cox was one of too many children who did not get adequate help soon enough, Future Generations Commissioner Sophie Howe has said. She wants the education system and agencies working closer on adverse childhood experiences (ACE). Mr Cox, now 22, works in a call centre and dreams of starting his own landscape gardening company. It is an amazing turnaround for a man who...
