Dr. Brenner makes some good points about trauma, ACEs, and the role doctors have in broaching the subject with their patients. I agree with him that there is a bias against discussing issues of trauma, but I think there are other significant obstacles as well. The past and current findings of various ACEs research are still not as widely known as one would hope. Yesterday's event framed the issue of trauma and the effects of toxic stress so well, but it is now incumbent on the participants to take the next steps. I agree with strategies that include the sharing of narratives and storytelling (Julie Campbell's example yesterday was clear and inspiring), but we also need to engage and implore our payors and policy makers to include ACEs as a routine part of all health screening. Sorry for this spammy post, but: I think that a greater effort needs to be made to change public attitudes as well. Obviously this needs to start with the professions, as noted above, but it can't be limited to them. One of the hardest things about growing up with trauma is that you feel defective and isolated, and other people often treat you that way, too. As a traumatized child it gets harder to establish and maintain productive/trusting relationships, even though traumatized children...

A lot of people seem to have a hard time understanding how psychological trauma affects us. So here's a thought experiment that might help - replace "trauma," or any more specific terms (e.g. "abuse," "assault," etc) with "spiders." Or if you like spiders, pick a different animal that creeps you out. But for this thread, I'm going to stick with spiders. So what does this mean? Greater Richmond Trauma Informed Community Network, first to join ACEs Cooperative of Communities, shows what it means to ROCK!
In 2012, Greater Richmond SCAN and five other community partners hatched a one-year plan to educate the Richmond, Virginia, community about ACEs science and to embed trauma-informed practices. Eight years later, the original group has evolved into the Greater Richmond Trauma-Informed Community Network (GRTICN) with 495 people and 170 organizations. And they're just scratching the surface.
