School Violence - In the age of social media and the 24-hour news cycle, the topic has gained more and more attention. Although members of the national media tend to focus on gun violence, the percent of school children who are affected by school shootings remains very small; not a great comfort to those who experience such a tragic event. Instead, it is far more likely for students to be affected in their day-to-day lives by other threats or acts of hostility that make them feel unsafe.

Hi Erica I am sending your question to some colleagues who have thought a lot about your question - but my gut sense is that the "How Brains are Built" video is a great place to start rather than the Nadine Burke Harris video, which is fantastic, but as you suspect may be a bit much for parents at first.

I think what is critically necessary is better integration of systems. This is a concept that is very important in behavioral health and I think it applies here. Screening for ACEs in routine medical check-ups is a great step and something that I hope gains more and more momentum. However, there also needs to be be better communication and interconnectedness among various social service systems. Jane Addams Place, a homeless shelter for women and children in West Philadelphia, has instituted the Sanctuary Model with great success. In addition to that, the Scattergood Foundation and Jane Addams Place are hosting a Design Challenge to crowdsource ideas for trauma-informed products, the winning idea of which will be implemented at the shelter.
