Webinar: Making Sense of ACEs: The Adverse Childhood Experiences Study & Beyond

On the Web

Philadelphia ACE Task Force member Steven Berkowitz, MD, along with Amaya Jackson, MD, MPH will present this webinar

The course will provide an overview of the Adverse Childhood Experience Study including its origins, the method used and the key epidemiologic findings. In addition, it will present some of the criticisms of the methods used. Additional studies supporting the original findings including State Data that used the CDC’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) from the CDC will be presented. Several more recent studies that have used ACE survey items in particular populations such as juvenile and criminal justice, substance users etc. will also be provided.

The presenters will discuss possible reasons that the ACE Study approach of adding positive responses to 10 items that range from obvious potentially traumatic events (PTE) to general family dysfunction correlates with a range of poor health, mental health and behavioral outcomes in adulthood. Lastly, they will present a set of recommendations specific to important prevention and treatment interventions that should be considered in the face of these adverse events that impact childhood.
