Experiencing burnout can sometimes be unavoidable. It can be difficult to recognize how often we are checking in with ourselves especially with the abundance of responsibilities many of us have. How often are you completing a thorough inventory of your needs both mentally and physically?

If the past three years have taught us anything about ourselves as humans, it's that in the face of adversity our bodies and minds can have the capacity to endure and push through traumatic experiences. So I ask this question: “Just because we can diligently push ourselves to a finish line should that always be the goal?” I know many of us can relate to the feeling and effort of just “taking things day by day.” or “Optimistically hoping for a better future.” But how can we become better at taking care of ourselves in the moment, during the minutes and hours of each day?

During this workshop we will learn more about the 12 stages of burnout, a concept developed by Psychologists Herbert Freudenberger and Gail North, along with engaging in reflective activities that will help us explore our relationship to overworking as a trauma response and its correlation to our relationship with rest and guilt.

Presenter: Don Jackson

About the Summer Session Themes

After learning skills for workplace resilience - skills that help counter burnout, help prevent secondary traumatic stress, and that help strengthen your work within your team and with those to whom you provide service - how to you sustain these skills? This Summer Series is themed each month around one of the letters in CHIME - Connectedness, Hope & optimism, Identity, Meaning, Empowerment.  Using CHIME can help you keep track of your own skills and check in with yourself on how you are doing.

Supported in part by the Philadelphia Department of Public Health

This Resiliency Series is specially offered for community members and organizations who through their work are First Responders or are involved with those affected by the Substance Use Crisis in Philadelphia. The stress of caring for others can affect our bodies and minds. This free virtual series is here to support our workplaces and community and is open to anyone.
