The media is as uneducated about ACEs and trauma as the rest of our professional, topical and geographic communities, hence their sensationalistic approach. And just as in all our communities, there are beginnings of change with a couple of organizations that are promoting solution-oriented journalism, and a few of us who are starting to educate other journalists about trauma-informed journalism. There is great work also being done at the state level by Governor Larry Hogan and the Governor’s Office of Crime Control & Prevention (GOCCP) to bolster local efforts and expand Handle With Care to all of Maryland. Greater Richmond Trauma Informed Community Network, first to join ACEs Cooperative of Communities, shows what it means to ROCK!

In 2012, Greater Richmond SCAN and five other community partners hatched a one-year plan to educate the Richmond, Virginia, community about ACEs science and to embed trauma-informed practices. Eight years later, the original group has evolved into the Greater Richmond Trauma-Informed Community Network (GRTICN) with 495 people and 170 organizations. And they're just scratching the surface.
