Wisconsin state agencies end year one of trauma-informed learning community; goal is to be first trauma-informed state

Jane Stevens ·
Here in California, many people think that it’s only liberal Democrats who have a corner on championing the science of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and putting it into practice. That might be because people who use ACEs science don’t expel or suspend students, even if they’re throwing chairs and hurling expletives at the teacher. They ask "What happened to you?" rather than "What's wrong with you?" as a frame when they create juvenile detention centers where kids don’t fight, reduce...

With Dozens of Orphaned by Opioid Crisis, This Maryland County has new Outlook on Trauma Services [baltimoresun.com]

By Phil Davis, The Baltimore Sun, December 2, 2019 Growing up in a Cecil County trailer park, Ray Lynn has been shaped by tragedy. Lynn went from seeing drug addiction firsthand in his neighborhood as a child to tackling the problem as a police officer decades later. “I can name you friends that are dead because of it," he said. Lynn, 44, also saw his brother and sister burn to death in a house fire when he was 19, he said. It’s what led him to become a volunteer firefighter and, later, a...

Chris, I'm just starting it -- I'd LOVE to hear everyone's ideas regarding how they envision the group's work. So I'll just say it's wonderful to HAVE a group dedicated to changing minds in Maryland. Let's hear what you all have to say. I'm listening. Welcome.

If anyone who has joined our Maryland State ACEs group knows of ANY Maryland data collection going on now (or in the recent past) that is being or has been gathered to make policy or provide services to those living in Maryland with trauma, please share it! I'm very VERY interested in what's going on (if anything)! Thank you.

Brenda, Have you checked the links for Maryland on the State Projects page? Also, a new study was posted on employment outcomes last week. Not specific to MD but good info: Negative Life Events in Childhood as Risk Indicators of Labour Market Participation in Young Adulthood: A Prospective Birth Cohort Study - full text http://acesconnection.com/profiles/blogs/negative-life-events-in-childhood-as-risk-indicators-of-labour

Good questions Brenda, I'm relatively new to the area and not affiliated with any human service agencies. So Jane and Chris, others in the maryland group, do you know anyone who is affiliated witha human service agency who might know what the state reporting policy is on ACEs? Is there such a policy? I suggest we shake our networks a bit and see. For instance, was anyone in from Maryland in a position to answer the questionnaire circulated by the ACEs Pioneer folks (see the reference in the...

Just checked online: Doesn't look like Maryland reports adverse experiences on thier BRFSS questionnaires. Its kind of surprising in that Maryland seems to be a fairly progressive state. But ACE reporting makes fiscal sense too. http://www.marylandbrfss.org/cgi-bin/broker.exe CDC had ACEs data on only 5 states in 2009: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/pdf/wk/mm5949.pdf I did attend the online confference event NCCANS last week: Minnesota and Wisconsin are doing some pretty innovative work seriously...

Dennis, I attended the same Webinar last week - got my mind spinning on all the wonderful things Maryland COULD do if they were clued into ACEs, money spent on traumatized lives (somehow it always comes down to the money, doesn't it?). Still, it makes perfect sense that money flowing into prevention SHOULD reap huge monetary gains later in life. Chris, as usual, you are FILLED with wonderful arsenal for me :) -- I would LOVE to present to somebody who has clout in our state. And watch the...

Ok Brenda, Why don't we see if we can get a little Think Tank group together starting with this Maryland ACEs group. Heather Larkin will support this. She has developed an ACEs response think tank in the NY capital area with representatives from various agencies there. And she has offered to help me get such a group going here. We can brainstorm and identify our networks and tigure out what our goals might be and then do some project management. I will contact her and see whom she might...

Chris I agree on all counts you mentioned. Way back during the Vietnam war I worked for county mental health near Travis AirForce Base, "Gateway to the pacific." We didn't really have a good handle on PTSD yet, but I remember a young man who recently arrived "home" after a tour of duty as a helicopter gunner. He was one of those kids who enlisted rather than go to jail. He told me the only time he felt alive and doing anything worth while was when he was hanging out of his chopper spraying...

Welcome Cheryl Sharp! If there would be an opportunity to get together and forge some kind of plan to reach out to not only Maryland lawmakers, but Montgomery County lawmakers & social service system leaders to educate them on ACEs, collecting ACE data on their BRFSS intake forms, understand the need for prevention policies and laws to keep us all safer, healthier, happier, I would LOVE the opportunity! Meanwhile, if you have an idea for the group, please put it out there. I'm all ears!

Paid Family Leave is a key policy response to the NEAR (neurobiology, epigenetics, ACEs, and resilience) Science, as the time it provides for parent-child bonding helps to ensure the healthy development of babies and families. These parent-child relationships nurture early brain connections that form the foundation for all learning and relationships that follow.
