House Committee to Host Discussion with California Surgeon General Nadine Burke Harris & Former United States Surgeon General Regina Benjamin

September 24, 2019 (WASHINGTON) – This Friday, September 27th, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, and Rep. Lauren Underwood (D-IL), Vice Chairwoman of the Committee, will host part two of a series on homeland security and health to discuss the impact of homeland security policies on children.

The discussion will include California Surgeon General Dr. Nadine Burke Harris and former United States Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin, with opening remarks from Johns Hopkins Professor Dr. Maria Trent, lead author of the American Academy of Pediatrics policy statement “Racism and Its Impact on Child and Adolescent Health”. The discussion will focus on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the Trump Administration’s policies and proposals including indefinite detention of children, family separation, and the public charge rule. The speakers will also discuss adverse childhood experiences related to natural disasters and migration. The press and the public are invited to attend.
