Pip had high #ACEs
I just finished reading Great Expectations for the second time. I could relate to it much easier this reading as I used an ACEs lens to understand Pip's experiences and challenges. Dickens knew in 1860 the effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences. It seems strange to see humanity hasn't really evolved emotionally and socially that much in 160 years. Hopefully the ACEs movement will help propel our consciousness raising.

Change Your World is the newest addition to the body of resources on Resilience. It has been written by Michael Ungar, PhD - one of the most informed voices in resilience research. Although the reviewer was skeptical leading up to reading the book, expecting more victim blaming, which is often the predominant theme of resilience promotion, she was pleasantly surprised. She now recommends this book to everyone interested in learning how to build a healthier humanity.

Book review: The concept of resilience emerged about 40 years ago when psychologists considered the differing life trajectories of children exposed to similar traumatic life events and asked why some developed psychosocial pathology and some did not. It has since expanded to describe the adaptive responses to trauma across the human life span that usually maintain function but that can fail and result in conditions such as post–traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I'd like to suggest a book I wrote. Winner of the Children's Literary Classics gold medal 2016. The King of Average. Audiobook read by the author too. Author Gary Schwartz has crafted a brilliant read for middle-grade audiences. Replete with witty phrases and loads of powerful symbolism, The King of Average is not your average ho-hum read. Lately I've been thinking of the ACEs phenomenon as a special case of a broader phenomenon that has come to be known as structural violence. There are various definitions of this term but I find the version offered by Bandi X Lee ( Violence: an interdisciplinary approach to causes, consequences and cures ) illuminating and useful in terms of formulating remedies. Tian Dayton’s work is life changing. Her writing is eloquent and easy to understand. She is a wonderful teacher and offers insights that are nothing short of profound. I am almost finished with her Emotional Sobriety worbook, and have learned so much about patterns I had not seen before. The book Emotional Sobriety is a regular go-to.
