Speaking of Housing...

We know that so many negative outcomes are driven by adverse experiences and adverse environments. And we know from GWU's Pair of ACEs that homelessness is one of those experiences and that poor housing and a lack of affordability is one of those environments. So, this week, I set out to learn more at People & Places 2019.

I was so moved by so many riveting things that were said by the amazing speakers. To see the amazing Written Word recap by Hannah Hasan, please see my Twitter account (@TicTacJenny). Below are other poignant statements that I did my best to exactly recapture, but please forgive me if I left a few words out.

- Create "infrastructure justice"

- Do not aim for simply a "varnish of equity on the outside"

- You do not develop a community where people already lived, you displace the people

- Looking at national data in aggregate form eliminates those of the lowest income, you must look at disaggregated data to get the whole picture.

- "If you make programs for the most vulnerable, everyone will benefit"

- Bankers should take on the moniker of "first, do no harm"

- "incubate something, then duplicate"

- "inaction is expensive and research is showing us that"

- "It's not about putting a mural on a wall. It's about what's happening when the art is happening."

- Don't jump to solutions or outcomes for funders.

- The large systemic problems are local.

- People "don't live in silos, why should our philanthropy?"

- "No housing is affordable without a job"
