Cultural Competency in Multi-Regional Project Implementation

We have been sharing updates about one of our newest projects with Vaya Health and we hope you have been following along!

On the front-end of the project, we are continuing to meet with stakeholders to collect valuable information that will help propel our work forward. Behind the scenes, we are analyzing county-specific data with a culturally competent lens in order to gain a better view of the unique strengths, needs and challenges for each county and how those views impact the system as a whole.

One of the tools we have used to better understand each county is data regarding local child welfare statistics. From that, we have created a report that highlights placement statistics and demographics from each county. This not only creates a better understanding of the youth who are in custody, but it also helps create an awareness of practices of the local foster care system.

Compiling the data aides us in a better understanding of county-specific strengths and potential challenges which allows our project staff to ask  specific questions about county idiosyncrasies during focus groups.

Organizing quantitative data helps us to see how the 31 counties are similar but also allows us to view specific outliers and disparities among communities. Our continued goal is to improve the quality of the child welfare system which includes examining variables such as age, gender, race/ethnicity and viewing our work through a culturally competent lens.  We will combine the information from the reports we have created as well as the work we will do identifying themes from the focus groups in order to shape our shared goals for the equitable improvement of the child welfare system.
