Introducing Lisa Wright, Community Manager: Becoming Trauma-Informed & Beyond

Lisa BTIB [002)

Hello Trauma-Informed & Beyond Community!

I am excited to be one of the community managers for this new ACEs Connection community. I have worked as an outpatient trauma-focused treatment clinical social worker since 1993. My work has included providing treatment for children, teens and adults who have experienced sexual abuse, physical abuse, exposure to violence (community, family and interpersonal), witness to homicide and those with problem sexual behavior/sexual offending histories.  I am a proud member of our Child Advocacy Center Multi-disciplinary team and bring a trauma based lens to our work through case discussion and consultation.  It is only within recent years that I've ventured more into macro social work through our Greater Richmond Trauma-Informed Community Network (GRTICN).  I have served as one of the leaders of the GRTICN and it is because of the work of so many talented professionals in Richmond, VA, that we have accomplished the many things that Cissy mentioned in our community intro.

What can readers expect to learn from you? I plan to share about the work that we have been doing through the GRTICN.  We have gathered research and resources about organizational assessments that we will be posting. I also want to share about my work that has been focused specifically on building resilience within child welfare agencies, legal/court systems and within the outpatient trauma-focused treatment program that I oversee. As a result of the trauma-informed assessment process, our GRTICN Legal/Courts Committee helped to create a wellness room at the Richmond City Police Department, launched a Road 2 Resilience project that has provided information via eNotes and trainings to law enforcement officers on trauma and resilience, free yoga for sworn officers and much more!

What are you hoping to learn from this community? I am always on the lookout for more resources and hope to learn more from professionals and agencies across the nation. I love to share resources and connect with other trauma champions.  I also hope to find answers to my initial questions about developing a proclamation about what it means to be a trauma-informed professional and trauma-informed organization.

How did you get involved in the trauma-informed community resilience building movement? I began working with several local experts in the fall of 2012 to bring awareness to trauma-informed practice. This initiative led to the GRTICN that now has over 260 members with over 110 agencies represented from our community.

What are you passionate about this work? My hope is that this movement will bring about great changes for Richmond, Virginia (and beyond!!) as we provide trauma-informed services for our community and educate professionals about how to take care of themselves as they experience trauma exposure.

When you’re not wearing your professional hats, what are you doing? I enjoy spending time with my family (husband, two teens and my parents), going to spinning class, finding great resources on Pinterest, creating things (art, journaling, coloring), walking with my dogs, enjoying the outdoors in Richmond and finding peace & relaxation at the beach (one of my favorite spots on Hatteras Island, NC is the title pic).
