Don't Wait, Don't Rush

There's the adopted child who comes to the parent and asks about his before life; the foster child who is anxious to talk about her feelings. Then, there are those who say nothing and ask nothing. Trauma-informed parents don't assume that the boys and girls who are interested in their past or who have a need to talk about it are the ones coming forward. On the contrary, the fact the child isn't asking may indicate just how great the child needs to connect and feel connected t o their source.

Traumatized children are not curious, they are defensive. Creating a sense of curiosity in your child and modeling how to ask investigative type questions - questions with no particular right or wrong answers - will enlarge their capacity to rebound. Trauma-informed parenting restores the awe and wonder of childhood.

As a social work professional, I was involved in the trauma field twenty years ago. But I became a charismatic nondenominational church pastor, starting a college campus prayer movement. With my cultural heritage and training at an evangelical seminary, the focus of my ministry has been intercession, multi-ethnic discipleship and servant leadership. However, the development of community service involvement with the ministry brought me back to the engagement in my previous professional field.

This really sparked a "light bulb moment" for me. When you said "capacity to rebound" I read that as building resilience. Is that accurate? Do you have more information about the connection between building curiosity/teaching kids how to ask questions and building resilience? I am very interested in this!! Thanks - Sandi
