Returning to work after maternity leave can be a difficult transition—but usually more for moms than for babies.

That was definitely the case for Lindsay Mitchell, a marketer and mom of one living in the San Francisco Bay Area. As she approached the end of her maternity leave with her daughter Sloan in 2017, she thought everything would change.

“‘Once I go back to work, I don’t get to be Sloane’s mom anymore.’ That was the narrative running through my head every single day as I counted down to my return to work. No wonder I couldn’t stop crying,” she shared in a recent Instagram post for the Returnity Project, which she cofounded with fellow working mom Lauren Brandt. The account features real women sharing their stories about returning to work after having kids, so it’s fitting that her latest post is resonating so deeply with working moms for its applause-worthy words of reassurance.

A lot of those anxieties, she admits, were tied to the fact that Lindsay was raised by “the most incredible stay at home mom who dedicated her life to me and my siblings.”
