"Resilience" Documentary Screening and Panel Discussion - May 2

Sound Discipline is delighted to be able to host the documentary “Resilience” on May 2nd in partnership with King County Library System. Join us Wednesday night, 6-8pm at the Burien Library.

We’ve been supporting schools and families with trauma- informed practices to build resilience for 10 years. This one hour film by Jamie Redford illustrates the impacts of chronic stress on children’s brains. This information is critical for everyone who is interested in the impact of stress and trauma on the body and brain – educators, parents, and those who work with the public. We can all become “buffering adults” and build relationships that can help to counteract the impact of toxic stress in our communities.

Following the movie there will be a panel sharing the work being done by school and community leaders to buffer the impact of toxic stress and build resilience. The panel includes Sound Discipline staff and local educators:

DeeAnn Wells – Principal Campbell Hill Elementary
Tymmony Keagan – 6th grade teacher Dimmitt Middle School
Tanita Horton – Office Manager Campbell Hill Elementary
Briana Nelson – 4th grade teacher Campbell Hill Elementary

Register HERE on the King County Library website.

Synopsis from the movie website –
The child may not remember, but the body remembers.

Researchers have recently discovered a dangerous biological syndrome caused by abuse and neglect during childhood. As the new documentary Resilience reveals, toxic stress can trigger hormones that wreak havoc on the brains and bodies of children, putting them at a greater risk for disease, homelessness, prison time, and early death. While the broader impacts of poverty worsen the risk, no segment of society is immune. Resilience, however, also chronicles the dawn of a movement that is determined to fight back. Trailblazers in pediatrics, education, and social welfare are using cutting-edge science and field-tested therapies to protect children from the insidious effects of toxic stress—and the dark legacy of a childhood that no child would choose.
