Public Health Campaign

We all know that walking is great exercise, but what if a walking group could build resiliency in communities and in individuals? I believe it can, if done correctly. This is what my final project focused on.

Walking is beneficial in that it allows people to perform non-strenuous activities while still getting in shape. Groups are important in building friendships in communities, which we know in turn builds resiliency. And the walking group was born..

1. I first began my project with a poster. I wanted to focus on grass-roots advertising, so it was important to me to say things like "neighbors" and "meet at the community center." I also wanted to include real pictures of the members (with permission) so that they felt valued.

2. Next, I wrote an op-ed posted in the community newsletter, written by one of the walking group members. This was an important step in acquiring new members because it was a first-hand account of 'Tina's' experiences in the group. Tina lost weight, made friends, and felt like she could share her story with members of the group.

3. A radio ad was my multimedia piece. I first described what ACE's are and also explained that they effect adulthood, but that we can reduce the effect of ACE's with a few simple steps (get it). It is important to stay close within your community and feel valued to build this resiliency.

Thanks, all!
