PHC6534: Lowering Alcohol abuse on University Campuses

Summary:

My Intervention aims to help students suffering from ACE trauma combined with alcohol abuse on college campuses through offering specialized group therapy opportunities as well as alternative activities to lower the overall dependence on alcohol.

Trauma-Informed Principles Utilized in this Grant

We aim to hit of the 5 basic trauma informed principles provided by SAMHSA; safety, trustworthiness & transparency, peer support, mutuality & collaboration, empowerment & choice. (SAMHSA). These principles will be utilized as base building blocks in the group therapy the psychologists will facilitate, especially with discussion of addiction and having a background involving ACE experiences occur. Concepts like crating safe trustworthy peer supported environment that empowers and created off of collaboration are the basic necessities in any well functioning group therapy. These are necessary to great a good group learning and growing experience and help the students. If any of the students feel that these principles are not being met or need to be improved we will immediately work with the program psychologists to help work at creating a better environment that better encourages these principles.

Levels of the Social Ecological Model

The intervention plans to be based off the CDC's social ecological model, it aims to hit mainly the individual, community, and societal levels. (CDC 2022). It will hit the individual level through working at changing the direct thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors of the students involved. We aim to change their opinions and behaviors related to alcohol. It will hit the community level from how we are working with the university to make bigger changes around the concepts of alcohol around the whole campus from encouraging the program to all students. Societal level will be hit through changing the whole campus culture around alcohol consumption in general.

Public Health Framework

Our main goals in the public health framework are to hit the secondary and tertiary levels. (IWH2015). These will be hit through working with students who think they are at risk of alcohol abuse and those who suffer from substance abuse issues. Although we would like to hit all three levels, it is very difficult to create an intervention with therapy for those who do not have any signs or showings of alcohol abuse in any way, we decided it would be best to utilize our resources on those at higher risk.
