PHC6534: Identifying and Reducing Domestic Violence in Young Adults in Miami-Dade County Utilizing a Trauma Informed Approach

Miami-Dade county has the highest reported cases of domestic violence in any other county in Florida with 9,357 cases being reported in 2016 (Domestic Violence - Facts & Statistics, n.d.). These increasing statistics have led to the intervention of reducing domestic violence in young adults in Miami-Dade county who are enrolled at the University of Miami. Specifically, for young adults aged 18-26. In "Identifying and Reducing Domestic Violence in Young Adults in Miami-Dade County Utilizing a Trauma Informed Approach", we aim to utilize trauma informed approaches to deliver an effective intervention for those who have experiences ACEs and IPV. Our 6 week Zoom intervention aims to use a variety of trauma informed principles from Volume 1 of Trauma Informed Philanthropy: A Funders Resource Guide for Supporting Trauma-Informed Practice in the Deleware Valley (Trauma-Informed Philanthropy, Volume One, n.d.). These trauma informed principles include safety, trustworthiness, transparency, and peer support (Trauma-Informed Philanthropy, Volume One, n.d.). The utilization of these principles will allow for an effective intervention and a safe space for participants. Levels of the Social Ecological Model included in this intervention are the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and organizational levels (Scarneo et al., 2019). The intrapersonal levels are included as the participants will be able to self-identify the situation they are in. We aim for these individuals to build on their resilience by the end of the intervention. The interpersonal levels are also addressed as it is the main social setting for IPV. With IPV affecting the broader population, this ties in the organizational level as well. The public health frameworks being utilized in our intervention are mostly in the secondary and tertiary phase of prevention (Kisling & M Das, 2020). Detection will be used to screen eligible participants (Institute for Work and Health, 2015). Treatment resources given to participants aim to reduce the long term impact of any ACEs or IPV experienced. Overall, we hope to deliver an effective and empowering intervention that targets outcomes of ACEs and IPV.
