HSC4930: Improving Domestic Violence Outcomes for Children

Domestic violence not only affects the individual directly involved, but also the children who are indirectly involved by witnessing the violence. Spreading awareness to children can prevent future generations from normalizing domestic violence in the home. This project will target children in the Gainesville area to help them find peace and resilience from these incidents. Schools and teachers will play a large role in this project by giving students information on what healthy relationships look like and how to cope in traumatic situations through mindfulness programs. Schools will have programs for parents to attend that spread awareness on ACE's and present the risks of domestic violence on children. Healthcare workers will play a role in detecting and intervening in dangerous situations through in-home visits. The purpose of this intervention project is to spread awareness on domestic violence and decrease the occurrence and negative effects of it.

One trauma informed principle is empowerment, voice, and choice. This principle recognizes individuals’ strengths and experiences. This principle will build resilience by helping children feel individually loved and understood by maximizing their unique abilities and strengths while also acknowledging their different experiences. The levels of the social ecological model that the project will address are the interpersonal level and public policy level. The interpersonal level has been chosen because the interaction between teachers and the community with the individual child will increase. This project is set up to develop supports for threatened children, so increasing the support systems that the child or their family has available to them could positively affect their experience. For public health frameworks, primary prevention is used to create awareness and inform populations. In regards to domestic violence, programs to maintain healthy marriages and anger management classes could be offered for free. Students will be taught what healthy vs. unhealthy relationships looks like, so they know healthy relationships looks like from a young age. This will prevent people from staying in relationships with domestic violence.
