A Trauma-Informed Approach to Preventing, Screening, and Treating Abuse in Youth Sports in Alachua County Public School District- PHC6534

My intervention is, "A Trauma-Informed Approach to Preventing, Screening, and Treating Abuse in Youth Sports in Alachua County Public School District". The intervention involves training the existing mental health staff that services all of the Alachua County Public School District schools in trauma and abuse in youth sports. Then, multiple required online module would be created, one specific to each school's athletic staff, one for the parents of the student-athletes, and one for the student-athletes themselves. The modules would contain information about trauma/ ACEs, types of abuse in youth sports, identification of abuse, and screening and reporting protocols.

The trauma-informed principles my intervention will utilize are safety; peer support and mutual self-help; empowerment, voice and choice; trustworthiness and transparency; and collaboration and mutuality. This intervention will focus on the individual, relationship, and community levels of the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) Social Ecological Model (Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). This program will focus mostly on the primary stage of prevention which includes creating healthier environments. This will be accomplished by providing training on preventing abuse in youth sports to coaches, sports staff, parents, and the athletes themselves. The program will also have heavy influences on the secondary stage of prevention, which involves screenings for early detection and reduction of abuse, and the tertiary stage of prevention, which involves treatment for those affected by abuse.
