Stand Up Against Hate! #NJCivilRights Student Competition: Youth Bias Task Force Calls for Sweeping Changes to Fight Systemic Racism and Discrimination, As New Report Shows Spike in Bias Incidents in 2019

The pandemic and racial unrest are social justice issues that continue to ignite hatred, discrimination and bias.  Together we can stand up against hate and the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights wants our youth to have a voice and strive to be catalysts for change! New Jersey’s Interagency Task Force to Combat Youth Bias recently released a report that recommended, among other things, that the State launch “a public campaign to take a strong stance that hate has no place in New Jersey” by allowing students to create various forms of art “about standing up to hate and prejudice in New Jersey.” Accordingly, New Jersey’s Division on Civil Rights has launched a contest for young people throughout New Jersey to create and submit slogans, artwork, and videos that will raise awareness around the need to counter the recent rise in bias incidents and inspire young people across the state to stand up against hate in their communities.

Participants can submit in one or more of three categories: 1. Slogan/hashtag. Participants may submit an original slogan of six words or less that encourages New Jerseyans to stand up to hate. Only one slogan will be selected. 2. Artwork design. Participants may submit an original drawing, painting, or piece of digital artwork that follows the stand up to hate theme. One piece of artwork will be selected in each of four age groups: Elementary (Grades pre-k through 5); Middle (Grades 6-8); High School (Grades 9-12); and Young Adults (18-25 year olds not currently enrolled in high school). 3. 10-60 Second Video. Participants may submit an original video between 10 to 60 seconds in length that follows the stand up to hate theme. Entries should be submitted in a format that can be shared via Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Videos can feature any content that is on theme, including, but not limited to, narrative, poetry, spoken word, song, dance, or acting. Individual or group submissions will be accepted. Any accompanying music or beat must be original as well. Submissions will be accepted online until February 15, 2021.  Email CommunityRelations@NJCivilRights.Gov with questions.  Please do share with your entire New Jersey network.  Thanks again and be well.
