Sonoma Film Fest Screens Redford's Followup to Paper Tiger's Film "Resilience"

James Redford will screen "Resilience" twice at Sonoma's Film Fest this weekend.  For those of us who were transformed by his first film, Paper Tigers, it is big news that he'll screen his latest documentary in our own backyard.

The film works with the provocative premise:  “The child may not remember, but the body remembers.”  The trailer will surely capture your attention - watch it here.

Redford's website further explains:

The original research was controversial, but the findings revealed the most important public health findings of a generation. Resilience is a one‐hour documentary that delves into the science of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the birth of a new movement to treat and prevent toxic stress. Now understood to be one of the leading causes of everything from heart disease and cancer to substance abuse and depression, extremely stressful experiences in childhood can alter brain development and have lifelong effects on health and behavior.

However, as experts and practitioners profiled in Resilience are proving, what’s predictable is preventable. These physicians, educators, social workers and communities are daring to talk about the effects of divorce, abuse and neglect. And they’re using cutting edge science to help the next generation break the cycles of adversity and disease.

After movie watchers take in the film, they'll be invited to observe a panel discussion. Retired Social Worker, Sherry Smith is a film festival volunteer who pulled the panel together.

One of the panel members, Nick Honey, Sonoma County Human Services Division Director, will speak about our local efforts to heal, prevent, and treat ACE's while promoting Resiliency.  Nick is one of our local leaders who is putting money towards promoting resiliency in our Sonoma County families.  Human Services contracts with local providers to offer child abuse prevention services to families who've interacted with Family Youth and Children (formerly Child Protection Services) but who do not yet have a substantiated child abuse case.  This year, families will now receive parenting classes (Triple P) or counseling under the resiliency-building model of the Strengthening Families Framework.

"Parents should be recognized as being the experts on their own children and families," says Nick.  Strengthening Families builds on protective factors such as increasing parenting skills, increasing knowledge of child development, developing or expanding social connections, and maintaining concrete support in times of need.  "We chose this model because Strengthening Families is an evidence-based model that is proven to reduce child abuse, and because it feels good to engage with parents with this new positive and uplifting approach."

Mike Kennedy of Sonoma County Behavior Health will also serve on the panel.

We hope the film and panel discussion will inspire still more support and action in Sonoma County!
