Sonoma County Board of Supervisors Proclaiming the Month of September 2022 as Suicide Prevention Month in Sonoma County

Sonoma County Board of Supervisors adopt a gold resolution proclaiming the month of September 2022 as Suicide Prevention Month in Sonoma
County.

Suicide is a major public health issue that requires vigilant attention and preventative action. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that suicide rates rose in the United States from 2000 to 2018 by 30 percent.

On average there are 75 deaths by suicide each year in Sonoma County, making suicide the ninth leading cause of death in the County. According to the California Department of Public Health report, the Sonoma
County three-year average age-adjusted suicide death rate for 2018 through 2020 was 14.65 per 100,000 people per year, statistically higher than the California rate of 11.14 per 100,000 people per year.

Efforts to prevent suicide in Sonoma County are scheduled for Suicide Prevention Month. The September edition of the Mental Health Services Act Newsletter highlights several scheduled activities that recognize
Suicide Prevention Month including:
· September 14: Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk training for clinicians in Santa Rosa from 8:30 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m.
· September 29: Screening of The S Word and 988 Presentation at Finley Center from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00
p.m.
