Sonoma County PACEs Connection (CA)

Notes from the 10/1/2014 meeting

We have a new name - Sonoma County ACES Connection!

If you were unable to attend today’s meeting, you missed a lot!  Please mark your calendar for our next meeting Wed Oct 29th, from 12:30 to 2:00 in the DHS Public Health building located at 625 Fifth Street Santa Rosa – in the City View Room, right off the lobby.  An agenda to follow.

In addition to discussing the items on our attached agenda, we learned of a local effort seeking to improve care for children with high ACE scores!  At our next meeting we will learn more about how they will operationalize their plans.   We also agreed to become an on-line group and we outlined our next steps to formalize that plan.  There was discussion about upcoming ACES themed learning opportunities – both locally and regionally.

Jane shared the Community Resilience Cookbook and encouraged each of us to learn more about the process other communities took to become trauma informed.

Jane also shared – the National data on children and ACE scores:  http://www.childhealthdata.org...-0.pdf?Status=Master

Plus we reflected on the impact of place & poverty in trauma and resilience.  Learn more about  how place & poverty matters in the Portrait of Sonoma County:  http://www.sctainfo.org/pdf/Ag...ntation_20140714.pdf

A Portrait of Sonoma County features an Agenda for Action, a set of recommendations based on the health, education, and income data collected in the report and on current research of best practices for increasing Index scores and improving long-term health outcomes. The report identifies Southwest and Southeast Santa Rosa, Northwest Santa Rosa, The Springs, and East Cloverdale as locations within the County that would benefit from a place-based approach, given their high levels of unmet potential across all three focus areas.

The County of Sonoma will collaborate with a diverse array of community partners to respond to this report. Initial work will include:

  • Strengthening and exploring new opportunities to provide quality preschool to children and reducing gaps in educational opportunities for students from priority areas;
  • Investing early in the economic wellness of students by bolstering leadership and workforce development resources in the educational system;
  • Endorsing and promoting the report to inform County planning and investment strategies regarding land use, transportation, public works, and other built environment activities;
  • Ensure that the resources provided through Upstream Investments are aligned with the priority areas and populations highlighted in the report;
  • Using the report as a resource to redouble community engagement efforts, build local partnerships, and identify assets that will lead to stronger and healthier communities.

In closing, I hope you can join us for the next meeting!  Your insight and input is valuable to our group – and to the greater community!

Karen
