2:00 PM to 5:00 PM (PST)

300 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza, Suite 520

Oakland, CA 94612

This Valentine’s Day, BARHII’s Structural Racism and Social Determinants of Health Committee would like to invite you to a training that addresses what we can do as individuals to protect and support the members of our community who are vulnerable to racist, sexist, homophobic, islamophobic attacks and explores our role as individuals in supporting safe communities for everyone.

In this interactive and experiential training, participants will learn about the bystander effect, the pre-planning needed to intervene, and practice specific intervention techniques.

The workshop will be facilitated by Cat Willett, Project AWARE Project Director and Lead Trainer for Catholic Charities.  She facilitates training, coaching, and technical assistance throughout West Contra Costa County, California.  Cat has worked extensively in restorative practices and community mental health education in Chicago, IL and throughout the Bay Area for the last 6 years. When not training people, Cat can be found at the nearest library or activist potluck.

More about the need for this training:
According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, in the ten days after the election, there were more than 900 reports of intimidation and harassment across the country, “People have experienced harassment at school, at work, at home, on the street, in public transportation, in their cars, in grocery stores and other places of business, and in their houses of worship. They most often have received messages of hate and intolerance through graffiti and verbal harassment.”  This was also reflected in our Post Election workshop, where Napa, Alameda and Contra Costa counties reported bias and hate incidents in both schools and public spaces.

BARHII’s January general meeting discussed Public Health as a Sanctuary and addressed strategies for institutions.  In this workshop we look to develop strategies that individuals can use.

If you have any questions, are interested in bringing this training to your community, or are interested in learning to facilitate this training yourself, please contact Krystal Robinson Justice at KRobinsonJustice@BARHII.org
