Sticks and stones can break your bones, but we are finding out words are just as hurtful. While what we say can't leave a physical scar, we can carry them with us for a lifetime.

This is a problem created by what we say, but something we really do not talk about enough.

Unhealthy relationships can be devastating for spouses, but Patty Price, Associate Director for Shasta County Child Abuse Prevention Coordinating Council (CAP-C) says it is the damage to the little ones, we often forget are in the room.

"If a child is in a home, where there are trauma and drama going on constantly, they are in an unpredictable environment. That is going to increase their ACE's and it's also going to increase the development of their brain, specifically the first year of age," said Price.

ACE's or Adverse Childhood Experiences is the term used to describe all types of abuse and neglect for children under the age of 18. This can be anything from domestic violence and sexual assault to drug addiction between spouses.

Shockingly, Price says emotional abuse at an early age can have a life long impact.
