Join CFS to combat 2 major risk factors for child abuse and neglect

Now more than ever, prevention matters. At Center for Family Strengthening every year we raise awareness for April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month—but this year, under these extraordinary circumstances, the designation takes on an even greater and more urgent significance.

Suddenly we've been isolated from each other, and from children, our most vulnerable community members. Mandated reporters such as teachers, health care professionals, and even family members, friends, and neighbors, have been cut off, with little or no access to those at most risk for abuse and neglect. As with every other aspect of this global pandemic, the situation is unprecedented. There is no prior example to follow, no playbook from which to draw.

Two of the major risk factors leading to child abuse and neglect are family isolation and stress. Times of stress increase incidents of abuse, neglect, and childhood trauma known as ACEs. Adverse Childhood Experiences, or ACEs, have a significant impact on a child’s future and are linked to a greater risk of life long issues like diabetes, smoking, substance abuse, homelessness or inability to work. The most severe health and social problems in our nation are a consequence of adverse childhood experiences.

So how do we combat the risk factors? We know connection, education and advocacy are the most effective practices in the primary prevention of child maltreatment. For over 20 years Center for Family Strengthening programs have proactively ensured that strong, healthy families are a community priority. Today our commitment to serving our community is stronger than ever.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. This is a time to publicly acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse and neglect, and to promote the social and emotional well-being of children and families.

Even though San Luis Obispo County is comprised of many different families, we are all part of one community. We all have a roll to play in keeping children safe and healthy. During Child Abuse Prevention Month join Center for Family Strengthening in raising awareness about child abuse and neglect prevention.
