Call for Proposals
For California artists, organizations, and community groups - Sol Collective is seeking proposals from California artists, media makers, youth, activists, educators, and organizations for this year’s #SchoolsNotPrisons DIY campaign. We are looking for innovative ideas from California creatives to challenge California’s spending priorities, propose solutions to divest funds from prisons to schools and other issues such as anti-immigration policies, immigration detention, health etc.. and explore restorative, healthy, just practices, policies, and cultures that our communities need in order to move away from the punitive, divisive, and sometimes cruel practices, policies, and cultures that so many of us live with today. Sol Collective will be funding up to 15 community projects up to $5,000 per project. Sol Collective will be working closely with community partners throughout the state to provide support and technical assistance to bring these projects to fruition as part of the 2018 #SchoolsNotPrisons DIY campaign.
Background
California has built 22 prisons and only one university since the 1980s and spends $10 billion a year on our prison system to punish rather than prevent crime. It is time for the people of California to create more effective solutions divesting from prison systems and investing in the restoration, health, and education of our future.
In 2016 the #SchoolsNotPrisons tour led by Revolt Impact created a platform for communities to challenge California’s spending priorities and advocate for health, education, and prevention as an alternative to the punitive systems currently in place. Last year’s tour touched down in 12 cities in California and activated nearly 5,000 people between the ages of 15 and 50 at the intersection of art, culture, and activism.
Project Description
Sol Collective is looking to fund and support creative projects in any artistic medium and community activations that challenge California’s spending priorities and focus on health, restorative practices, social justice, immigration policies, and cultural exploration. Projects must provide education on current punitive pipeline systems (ex: The school-to-prison pipeline, immigrant detention) and bring awareness to alternative investment strategies.

Qualifications and Eligibility
Applicant must live in the State of California
Applicants can be individuals, community groups, or organizations
Projects can not include explicit lobbying. Lobbying is the practice of trying to persuade legislators to propose, pass, or defeat legislation or to change existing laws.
