Dr Nadine Burke Harris and the movie "Resilience"

Good morning everyone!

As announced at the meeting yesterday, we are looking forward to a great ACEs related event coming up on Tuesday, November 1. UCD Family & Community Medicine is working closely with Resilient Sac to plan a screening of the new film Resilience. And as an extra special bonus - we will have Dr. Nadine Burke Harris there to speak after the movie.

If you aren't familiar with Dr. Burke Harris, here is her very well known TED Talk (over 2.1 million views!):

And the trailer for the film Resilience:

We are looking for feedback about what we should ask Dr Burke Harris to speak about after the movie screening. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to comment below or email theckers@ucdavis.edu.

Hi Teryn,  This looks great!  I would love to see and hear Dr. Harris focus on the essentials of successful programs and what works across the lifespan--but my bias, of course, is the prenatal to seven years of a family's development.  So if we could let her know what is happening in SAC presently and advise us on directions and resources to go in, I think that that Resiliency focus would be the most helpful.  Also, I know that she has just had her second baby a few months ago and it would be great if she could also focus on the Black Infant Mortality rate in SAC and what is being done about it.  I would love to meet with you next week to further discuss more of this.

Fantastic! Thank you for your input, Barbara! We are working to finalize the schedule for the day. Once we have more info on that, I would love to chat more about ideas. Based on what you said and what was discussed at the Resilient Sac meeting this week, it sounds like it's really important that we ask her to address race in some capacity. Not sure if that will be infant mortality, historical trauma, etc. I plan to check with her coordinators to see what she is most comfortable talking about.
