The Drexel University Center for Nonviolence and Social Justice is currently seeking applicants for our 9-week Community Health Worker Peer (CHWP)/Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) Training Academy. This program, sponsored by a grant from the Department of Justice Office for Victims of Crime, is designed to train men, ages 18-30, who have experienced violent injury in their own lives to become Community Health Worker Peers/ Certified Peer Specialist. The current requirements for eligibility for this training are:
- Identify as male
- Ages 18-30
- Lived experience of violence (either to themselves or someone close to them)
- HS diploma or GED
- Willing to commit to 9 weeks of training (4 days per week, Monday, Tuesday Wednesday, Thursday)
The training will provide trauma-informed instruction where participants will gain skills in violence prevention/intervention, community education, health system navigation, how to approach physical health and mental health emergencies, addressing the impact of trauma, motivational interviewing, HIPAA regulations and confidentiality, mandated reporter guidelines, group facilitation skills and de-escalation techniques to help young people in Philadelphia who are injured by violence.
