Michigan ACEs Action (MI)

Healthy and resilient kids, families, and communities are the foundation for a flourishing, vibrant region. We are dedicated to creating a trauma-informed Michigan and working together across sectors to share our efforts in building resilience and reducing toxic stress for Michigan children and families.

I have a family member who is otherwise a kind and good citizen who has a bipolar diagnosis and history of childhood trauma as well as being a veteran with cancer.  He had possession of guns and was not allowed to and during a manic episode this fall concerned friends and family continually went to the police who did what they could but finally had a reason to search the home for a missing gun from a family members home.  He is now facing some felony charges.  It is not clear yet if the prosector is looking for a plea plus probation.  He has gone through the mental health court before and did quite well.  Someone said he could not do the mental health court again.  We are wondering what we should do-he needed help, made a mistake was not acting dangerous and had forgotten he took the gun because there were children in the house where the gun was.  It is quite complicate but we are hoping to provide many letters from community members on his kindness when medicated but also any information on Michigan, the penal code re: these issues and anything that might apply and help the veteran out.
