Innovative, New Approach in Charlevoix County, Michigan Court

CHARLEVOIX COUNTY PROBATE / FAMILY COURT

SAFE HARBOR ADOLESCENT

RECOVERY PROGRAM

An innovative trauma-informed substance abuse treatment program where youth find safe sanctuary to heal and move forward.

Charlevoix County Probate/Family Court is pleased to announce, effective October 1, 2015, the launch of Safe Harbor Adolescent Recovery Program (SHARP), an innovative trauma-informed substance abuse treatment program for adolescents. SHARP is a product of a collaborative agreement between the Charlevoix County Probate/Family Court (CCP/FC), Western Michigan University’s Children’s Trauma Assessment Center (WMU-CTAC) and exceptional clinicians with extensive experience and/or specialities in adolescent substance abuse, adolescent mental health, trauma-informed care, trauma-specific brain-based treatment and adolescent behavioral medicine.

What makes SHARP the best choice for a referral?

SHARP will be the first court-administered adolescent substance abuse treatment program in Michigan to offer all phases of treatment: stabilization, assessment, treatment and transition services, as well as, meeting education requirements from one location. For the past 16 years, CCP/FC has successfully provided adolescent substance abuse program services, and based on that experience results reveal that many teenagers abusing substances are also struggling with unresolved traumatic stress and emotional issues, which frequently and directly contribute to the substance abuse. Therefore, this newly enhanced program will address the deficit in traditional substance abuse programs that leave unresolved emotional, mental and traumatic stress issues left unaddressed.

SHARP offers a multi-modal approach to Substance Abuse Treatment that includes:

  • Comprehensive Substance Abuse Assessment
  • Trauma-Informed Neurodevelopmental and Neurobehavioral Assessment
  • Interdisciplinary Team approach to Substance Abuse Treatment under the leadership of CTAC consultants
  • Brain-based and Trauma-Informed modalities for Substance Abuse Treatment
  • Intensive psycho-education for stress reduction with both the adolescents and family units: foster parents, guardians and biological parents
  • Brain-based medication management focused on optimizing self-regulation
  • Clinical focus on self-regulation skill mastery while experiencing toxic stress
  • Expressive Therapies: Music, Art, Dance, Zentangle Drawing Method and more

The collaborative agreement with CTAC directly benefits adolescents by virtue of high quality programming provided by SHARP clinicians through CTACs collaborative arrangements with several nationally-recognized leaders in substance abuse and traumatic stress. The major universities represented by CTAC alliances include Harvard, Yale, and Indiana University.

SHARPs foster homes and educational setting:

The adolescents are placed in court licensed and supervised homes. Our foster parents are trained in the issues of adolescent substance abuse and trauma-informed care. Charlevoix Public Schools will continue to provide the teaching staff for our alternative educational setting, Round Lake High School (RLHS).

Justice that restores the lives of at-risk youth:

Again, we are pleased to share the strengths of our Safe Harbor Adolescent Recovery Program, a SHARP offering ofcutting-edge adolescent substance abuse programming. CCP/FC takes great pride in our court leadership’s steadfast commitment to administeringJustice that Restores the Lives of At-Risk Youth.

How to make a referral to SHARP:

Charlevoix County Probate/Family Court will coordinate all referrals and placements into our program. The per diem rate for this program is $160.00.  If you would like to make a referral please contact John McLean, Program Director for Safe Harbor Adolescent Recovery Program at 231-547-8191 or mcleanj@charlevoixcounty.org.

Awesome!!!!

(With my one caveat --- I HOPE the organization understands that meds do little for trauma and focus heavily on the other strategies like MBSR, Yoga, Trauma-drauma and the expressive arts, equine therapy etc to build SAFE environments, minds and bodies that youth can habitate then develop strong sense of a positive self so youth can heal... They may even consider other strategies at some point in the future like Neurofeedback or biofeedback with breath and heart rate variability tools for example heart math). Oh and maybe other tools like autobiographical writing and tapping are relatively simple and inexpensive.

This is so exciting!!!!!!    And I am sorry I'm a little Leary of Meds on the list, I've just seen too many traumatized kids and adults over-medicated that this is scary to me....
