'Art of Recovery' fights stigma

A heavy, metal lock. Three men seated in a doctor’s waiting room. A bright flower in full bloom. The three images describe Marilyn Rebant’s journey of recovery after a devastating fall left her hospitalized with a severe head injury.

The Traverse City artist channeled her emotions through a paintbrush to canvas to help her cope with the accident. She felt trapped in a hospital bed, endured countless physical therapy appointments and slowly returned back to herself, like a flower blooming in the spring.

“That’s the painting that shows my recovery,” Rebant said of the plant standing tall. “That’s me coming back to life.”

Rebant, 66, is one of about 40 area artists who will showcase their work at Northern Lakes Community Mental Health’s “Art of Recovery: The Human Journey” exhibit next month. Each piece on display shares stories of recovery, whether it’s from mental illness, physical injury, addiction or the loss of a loved one.
