Many Minnesota schools are trying innovative approaches to promote social emotional learning and to make the classroom a safe learning environment for children who have experienced trauma. This webinar is a chance to hear from three such innovators: Dr. Mark Sander, a psychologist working in the Minneapolis Public Schools who also consults with schools across Minnesota and in other states; and Sharleen Zeman-Sperle and Stacy Bender-Fayette, who through their work with Peacemaker Resources have introduced social-emotional learning in all the Bemidji area elementary schools and some surrounding area schools as well. It will also be a chance for YOU to share what you may be doing in your school, and to engage in conversation with others across the state who are exploring the NEAR science (Neurobiology, Epigenetics, the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study, and Resilience) and its implications for the classroom.

About the Presenters

Dr. Mark Sander is a Senior Clinical Psychologist for Hennepin County and the Director of School Mental Health for Hennepin County and the Minneapolis Public Schools. In that role, he coordinates the Minneapolis Expanded School Mental Health Program and conducts research and evaluation on the program and provides technical assistance to the Hennepin County School Mental Health Initiative. Dr. Sander is a certified Master Trainer in the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study and for the past three years has been providing training and consultation on develop trauma informed organizations and trauma sensitive schools. Dr. Sander has published several journal articles and book chapters on school mental health and has presented extensively on school mental health at local, state and national conferences.

Stacy Bender-Fayette (right) & Sharleen Zeman-Sperle (left) have been in the education field for more than fifteen years.  Both are working as Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Specialists for Peacemaker Resources, a nonprofit serving schools in Northwest Minnesota. They facilitate the STAR (Students Teaching Attitudes of Respect) program, a student leadership program in fourteen area school districts. They also provide teacher professional development in the areas of Adverse Childhood Experiences, Social and Emotional Learning, and positive psychology. Peacemaker Resources supports the research that shows that the strongest educational models foster both academic success and compassionate character development.
