The Cycle of Socialization and Oppression

In this introductory session, participants will learn about the ways our socialization impacts the lens through which we view everything around us, how we are all affected by issues of oppression, and how we can alter our view to an equity lens.

Learning Objectives:

• Reflect on our own socialization and identity in our society
• Understand the historical context for equity
• Begin thinking about what solidarity looks like
• Understand equity as a skill as well as a concept

About the Presenter: Jasmyne King, Director of the Center for Racial and Gender Equity, YWCA Lancaster

BIO: Jasmyne King, serves as the Director of the Center for Racial and Gender Equity (CRGE) for YWCA Lancaster. She is native of Lancaster and a 2005 graduate of J.P. McCaskey High School. Jasmyne also holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Millersville University. With a background in communications and public relations, she has devoted her work to fighting for social justice. Jasmyne’s work is fueled from her deep understanding of systemic and structural barriers that disenfranchise our minoritized community members. On a more personal level, Jasmyne is a mother to 4 children, a beloved daughter, sister, cousin, and friend. She leans on the words of Audre Lorde “I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own.”
