Broken Places: a film about trauma and resilience premiering on PBS April 6

On Monday evening, April 6, at 10PM Eastern time, local PBS stations (including WITF in Central PA) will be premiering a film about trauma and resilience titled "Broken Places".  The good news is we can all watch safely and with appropriate #SocialDistancing from the comfort of our own homes! (just be careful about who's sitting at the other end of the sofa!)

Here's info about this film:

"This poignant production represents the culmination of four decades of bringing PBS viewers powerful stories of young people struggling to overcome adversity. Over the years, Weisberg noticed that “one question emerged from all of my documentaries about children at risk: Why are some children severely damaged by early trauma while others are able to thrive?” Ernest Hemingway had a powerful way of addressing this question in A Farewell to Arms where he wrote, “The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places.” Hemingway’s observation about adversity and resilience inspired the title of Weisberg’s film and captured the central theme he addresses in Broken Places.

While experts have long understood that there is a strong connection between early adversity and poor mental and physical health outcomes later in life, Producer/Director Weisberg didn’t want to merely rehash this statistical correlation. Instead, he dug into 40 years of his film archives to update a few of the stories of the abused and neglected children he chronicled decades ago. Ultimately, viewers of Broken Places are given a dramatic time-lapse perspective, witnessing how the early adverse experiences of these children shaped their lives as adults. While there have been other films that have addressed this topic, none have been able to illustrate the devastating impact of childhood adversity or the remarkable characteristics or resilience in the context of moving stories that span decades. Broken Places carefully interweaves these longitudinal narratives with commentary from a few  In addition to shedding light on exciting new developments in neuroscience that help explain the dramatic outcomes that the film reveals, these experts share their insights into the people and systems that either failed the film’s main subjects or helped them overcome the formidable obstacles they encountered."
