Trauma Informed Congregations - A Strategy Document

Dale Fletcher ·
Hi Folks, I have recently been trained as an ACE Master Trainer through the Children's Trust of South Carolina . In the training we received materials from ACE Interface . My special interest is working with churches and ministries to educate and equip them to be better trauma-informed and to increase the resilience of members of their congregation and of the communities members they serve. Myself and another Master Trainer have presented information on ACEs to a small group of people at a...

Presenting to my congregation

Cynthia Thelen ·
Good Evening, Everyone! I'm in the beginning stages of prep for a Sunday morning presentation in October where I am tasked with giving a very concise yet educational talk on ACES. This will be the first-time introduction for our church family, and as we house and run a significant ministry to struggling (in every way) families , it is imperative we start to help our congregation become trauma-informed. The mindset is often, "we lead you to the Lord, now move on", and the frustration among...

Augusta, I just came across your post. I, too, am interested in church-based Trauma Ministry. My dearest SDA friend is the musician, Kelly Mowrer. Do you know Kelly? I’d like to learn more about your interest in church-based trauma care and where you’d like to go with it. Looking forward to hearing from you. Blessings!

Hi Dale, thank you so much for sharing your PowerPoint. I have been talking to my pastor and church and I am preparing to help my church become trauma-informed. I'm creating resources online, so would appreciate anything ya'll have gathered. Thanks, Beth@moorewellness.life P.S. I saw your question about neuroplasticity and I have some information if you'd like to use any of it for future teachings. Brain Plasticity Neural Growth Derives from exposure to new experiences and stimuli Allows for...

I would love to join this conversation and hear the blog talk radio but I'll be traveling and don't know if I'll have access to a computer. In my church I run DivorceCare, GriefShare and teach a single parent Bible study class. I also created and developed DivorceCare for Kids (DC4K.org) and I know how trauma affects these kids. DC4K has been out for 10 years this summer and we have seen changed lives because of it. We now have young adults who went through DC4K and they are having better...

I agree with you, Chris! There are so very many people hurting that the generic sermons just don't reach them. We have to get out and serve the hurting people like Jesus did. We started a ministry that we are waiting for 501c3 status for, called Lapeer P.E.A.R.L.S. (Prevent. Educate. Advocate. Restore. Love. Support) that is faith based, using Matthew 18:10 Beware that you don't look down on any of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels are always in the presence of my...

Linda Ranson Jacobs ·
Chris, I understand what you are saying. My expertise is in ministering children from divorce and single parent homes. For years I ran a therapeutic child care in OK. I had no church to send these families to because churches just didn't understand what was needed. Parents would say, "why should I go to church? I just get called out to deal with my own child so I might as well stay home." Thankfully more and more special needs ministries are cropping up now. However, church leaders and...

Hi Cyndi, I appreciate that you're doing this for your church! I recently created a more complete presentation on ACES from a biblical perspective. I used slides from ACE Interface and added several of my own that were related to scriptural principles and our shared Christian faith. If it would help I could share more with you. In Christ, Dale

Re: Examples of churches, temples, synagogues, mosques, and other faith communities practicing child trauma prevention and intervention?

Chaplain Chris Haughee ·
The curriculum I wrote earlier this year is just starting to be implemented in the faith communities that requested it. Here is something I wrote up recently that might be helpful? "Bruised Reeds and Smoldering Wicks" a study for churches It's already being utilized in 28 different states and the District of Columbia, and it may be the best resource for introducing your congregation to the biblical and theological reasons to consider "trauma-informed ministry." Written by Intermountain's own...

Have we created any language on what does it mean to be a trauma informed church? Chris has some great specific possible outcomes in his curriculum. I am looking for some fill in the blank value added statements to begin to work with churches i.e. What does it mean to be a trauma informed church elders are _____________________ conversations are happening on __________________________ families are willing to ________________________ bible study focuses on____________________

Dave Lockridge ·
Lauralee, Thanks for reaching out. Happy to hear from you. Check my website: aceovercomers.org We now have online facilitator training. The first session (one of twelve) is free. There is a difference between establishing a safe culture in a church and just adding a new class to the list of available classes. Establishing a safe culture requires the pastor and leadership to "buy into" understanding and practicing trauma-informed approach to ministry. I'm not saying that the pastor must...

I have begun to present a PowerPoint Presentation entitled Roots Of Addiction in order to begin educating the SDA on ACE's. I am a former Credentialed Substance Abuse Counselor, I am a Certified Recovery Coach and am a person in long term recovery from substance abuse addiction and a recovering trauma survivor. I am a writer and radio show host. I have been called to share my experience, strength, and hope with those within the SDA church. Some will accept the message, most will not. That is...

Going beyond trauma informed to trauma responsive in our faith communities

Roxanna Foster ·
I would like to share a great resource for churches/faith communities to become trauma responsive. First United Methodist Church is in Central Minnesota have been working for three years to become a trauma responsive church. They would say they are not the experts in any way although they have stepped out on faith both within their congregation and throughout the community. Their website has become an example and resource for many please check it out.
