Hi Folks! I'm attaching two documents that I used to deliver the teaching I mentioned in the post above. There is a Powerpoint file that I used on the Sunday that I've converted to a PDF. And the script that accompanies the Powerpoint is also in a PDF document. This presentation and the supporting documents are a 'work in progress.' I"m wondering why you list spiritual issues with heart issues. In my view, they are two separate systems for describing our whole person. I don't see psychological therapy anywhere as a viable research based approach to shame, guilt, forgiveness, anger, abandonment, etc. Yes, they can be spiritual, but therapy deals with those issues also. I prefer to speak of wholeness including heart, mind, spirit, and body. They are all interconnected and each has its own therapeutic modalities. Theology...

Thanks so much for sharing all of this information and all your hard work. Choosing the right words for these discussions is challenging....mind, spirit, soul, heart?? It's not black and white. As a doctor, I first think of the heart as the incredible pumping heart that pumps 1500-2000 gallons of blood each day as it recirculates our 5 quarts of blood. Hi Daun, we are not using slides for our Thursday sessions. We are slowing addressing the most prevalent spiritual risk factors and issues of the heart and their associated biblical principles/truths. This Thursday at least one of the participants experienced a very, very powerful release/inner healing/deliverance. It was life changing for her, praise God!

I'll jump on this bandwagon also and would like to see your slides. I've done ACEs training for children's ministers and sent someone my slides and presentation. Can't remember who it was. But my slides are more for children's ministers and I'd like to see the slides for grown up people. Ha, ha.

To answer your question, I have not yet developed such a 'next step' document, etc. In doing a quick search I found this - My ACES are too high, now what Is this the kind of thing that you are talking about, but from a faith perspective? And I see you may be the referenced author. Do you have an accurate reference source that should be used? And attached is a PPT slide with a completed table of Biblical Principles for Risk Factors.

Hi there! SO happy I found this faith-based ACE resource! I am putting together a simple basic presentation for a local congregation and I wanted to speak on creating a safe trauma-informed congregation. I was directed to this ACE faith-based focus. Could I use some of your work and of course, give credit where it is due? I am also putting together a resource list. Do you have any suggestions for faith-based books? I do not know many faith-based books for trauma survivors. Thank you!

You might check in with Shelley Melia. I went to a workshop last year at the LifeWay KidMin Conference and she talked about grief and resilience in kids. She has a child's capacity for resilience survey and a parent survey. Don't know if this is what you are looking for but contact and her and find out. Dale, As part of my doctorate of ministry work I have been engaged in this discussion with the fine folks at Multnomah University in Portland, Oregon. My specific ministry project that will be the basis of my thesis is to collaboratively write a trauma-informed VBS curriculum. I am also hoping to collaborate with ChildWise, an organization built around ACEs education in Helena, MT about how we could have a faith-based breakout session during a Fall Conference they are planning on Resilience.

Thanks for the mention of the post on trauma -informed churches that I wrote. I can't wrap my mind around why ministers and seminaries are not engaging in this conversation and training their people. I too believe that early trauma is trauma to the spirit and the heart. Churches could do so much to soothe the trauma the little ones are experiencing. That said, Wesley Theological Seminary partners with my office (Center for Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships) and is exploring just this thing. I really think we need to have a meeting where we can all explore what this training would look like. I'd be happy to host in DC!

Most people will have prior existing traumas. Sometimes, these are triggered by authority figures (e.g., ministers), regardless of the authority figure’s intention. Kimberly, I'd be interested also. I'll email you. My work has been with children's ministers and I speak at several national children's minister's conferences. They get concerned when a child's behavior is out of control. They get concerned when there are bruises. They get concerned when a child is leaning toward suicide and makes it known. I work as a chaplain in a large regional hospital, and am also involved in bringing ACE presentations to local churches and faith-based organizations.
