Femicide in Kenya

Since 2019 there have been increasing cases of women being killed by men. In April this year two women athletes were killed by their respective lovers in their homes. This was shortly after they had won their respective races. Which begs the question: Is femicide a sign of resistance to change? These two women had won in their respective races. That translates to cash gifts, brand endorsements, and ability to lead fulfilling lives with minimal stress.

The next logical question is whether the men felt threatened by their women having access to all the money. Don't get me wrong, these ladies did not deserve it at all. This is simply questioning how much of a threat a woman's freedom is to an insecure man. This further explores the evils of patriarchy which promises respect for only the men who have money. While also reminding us of the other gaps that are created by such a system. It does not provide a framework for how to process emotions in case the reality is far from what is expected.

You can read what our founder wrote about femicide in Kenya here. We have to break silence more often when it comes to both sexual and gender based violence. These conversation are uncomfortable and deeply emotive, which highlights a need. Of course solutions must involve everyone since these are relational and social issues.
