California Essentials for Childhood Initiative (CA)

The California Essentials for Childhood Initiative uses a public health and collective impact approach to align and enhance collaborative efforts to promote safe, stable, nurturing relationships and environments for children, youth and families through systems, policy and social norms change.

Meet the Essentials for Childhood Initiative Cal-EIS Fellow: Rozhan Ghanbari

Rozhan Ghanbari is a California Epidemiologic Investigation Service (Cal-EIS) Fellow working at the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) within the Injury and Violence Prevention Branch (IVPB). Currently she is working on analyzing and disseminating information regarding the Fatal Child Abuse and Neglect Surveillance Rozhan Headshot(FCANS) system. She is also working with the Essentials for Childhood (EfC) Initiative!

She received her B.S. in Public Health from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and her MPH in Epidemiology with a minor in Public Health Emergency Preparedness from Drexel University. Her Master's thesis utilized the DC Area Survey data to determine if there is an association between institutional trust and depressive symptoms. She further expanded that work to explore the potential for selection bias within the survey data. Rozhan was also a Dornsife Fellow where she worked on a project that focused on state mental health authorities’ priorities and factors that may influence their priorities for children's mental health, as well as refining the delivery of evidence-based care in health systems. She also had the opportunity to work with the Center for Firefighter Injury Research & Safety Trends regarding the Stress and Violence in fire-based Emergency Medical Services Responder’s (SAVER) project. Here she examined and analyzed verbal and physical violence reports across three metropolitan departments and their local unions.

These experiences strengthened Rozhan's research interests in violence prevention, mental health, and emergency preparedness. She is looking forward to learning more about the intersection between violence prevention and public health!

I am so excited Rozhan is working on this. The data on child fatalities has been of such poor quality that it is hard to make good policy decisions based upon it. There needs to be better, more complete reporting, with better oversight at the DPH end, and consistent, valid investigations at the incident end. As a member of the State Citizen's Review Panel on Critical Incidents I look forward to working with the Essentials team on this issue.
