Safe & Sounds Unveils New Interactive Website Calculating Cost of Child Abuse to Each California County, Region

Safe & Sound’s is excited to announce that updated data documenting the startling economic impact of child maltreatment is now available for all 58 counties in California. An added feature with this update is emerging research on community protective factors -- including seeking racial and social justice -- which nurture family strengths and allow all children to thrive.

This website builds on a series of reports and studies by Safe & Sound, the first of which, “The Economics of Child Abuse: A Study of San Francisco,” was published in 2017 as a partnership with University of California’s Haas School of Business.

Key features include:

  • Research on factors within a community that strengthen families and promote the safety of children, including social connections and racial and social justice.
  • Research on factors within a community that place children at greater risk for abuse, and timely data on how these factors have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Child maltreatment data, including the number of substantiated and reported survivors, as well as fatalities for the state and within each county
  • Calculations of the economic burden that child maltreatment costs with the state and each county
  • The ability to select multiple counties in a area to see the cumulative total maltreatment costs for a region
  • Comparison points placing the financial sum in context (ex, the same amount could send xxx number of children to preschool)
  • A simple breakdown of how the costs are calculated
