Arkansas ACEs/Resilience Coalition (AR)

ACEs News and Notes -- Dec. 19

2019 Legislative Session on the Horizon
The 2019 regular legislative session of the Arkansas General Assembly starts Jan. 14.

Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families and the Invest Early Coalition have announced their respective legislative priorities for this session, which are attached. If your organization or agency has legislative priorities related to ACEs and/or resilience that you would like shared with the workgroup, please send them to me.

Please be sure to make your voice heard on legislation you feel strongly about -- legislators need your feedback.

Kids Count Day at the Capitol, sponsored by AACF, will be Jan. 30. We'll provide more information closer to the event.

Resources to Assist Parents with Mental Illness
The Temple University Collaborative on Community Inclusion has several free, downloadable resources for case managers and others who work with parents with mental illness. Topics include positive parenting, child resilience and custody/child welfare issues.

There is also an online education and support course for parents with severe mental illness (SMI). A randomized control trial showed the program enhanced parenting and coping skills, and decreased parental stress for mothers with SMI.

Last Weekly Email for the Year
There will not be an ACEs email next week. Best wishes to all of you for a healthy and happy holiday season.

Save the date for the January workgroup meeting, scheduled for 1 p.m. Jan. 9 at AFMC. Laura Abbott, a high school health teacher, trauma survivor and victim's rights advocate, will give a presentation on how she talks to her students about ACEs and trauma.

Free Conscious Discipline Webinar Series: Building Safety and Connection in Foster and Adoptive Families
Conscious Discipline is offering a three-part series of webinars for foster and adoptive parents on how to take a trauma-informed approach.

Session 1 covers the link between trauma and foster care, as well as what to expect when a child first arrives and how to build safety and connection from the start.

Session 2 provides tips on how to teach expectations, continue to build safety and connection, and how to create a foundation to resolve conflict in a positive way.

Session 3 gives a step-by-step process for managing big behaviors, dealing with questions and comments from others, and identifies common triggers and how to plan for them.
