http://ocde.k12oms.org/1250-94...amp;utm_medium=email

Recent research on child and adolescent brain development has strong implications for educators and health professionals, especially those working with youth who have experienced trauma.  Get an overview of child and adolescent brain development from the context of behavior and emotions; learn about the impact of complex trauma on student behavior and learning; and discuss strategies for helping teachers/educators to create classroom environments sensitive to students who've experienced trauma.

Objectives:

1.    Increase knowledge about child and adolescent development, particularly thinking, emotions and behavior.

2.    Define “trauma” and understand its impact on the developing brain.

3.    Recognize and identify trauma-related behaviors in the classroom.

4.    Learn about SFUSD's Wellness Center model and how Wellness staff were engaged in and leading trauma-informed practices in their schools.

Trainer: Alicia Rozum is a school social worker who served for over a decade in the San Francisco Unified School District’s Wellness Initiative. As the Wellness Coordinator, Alicia managed the on-campus Wellness Center at 2 diverse high schools. The Wellness Center provided free, accessible health and mental health services to students, emphasizing a strong social justice, community-oriented and youth development approach. As the Project Director, Mental Health at the California School-Based Health Alliance, Alicia supports schools around the state in providing high quality mental health services and programs, including direct services; therapeutic groups; alternative to suspension programs; coordination of services teams; and staff wellness activities.
