10/28 Meet-Up Notes

Alameda County ACEs Meet-up

October 28, 2014

4pm-5pm A’Cuppa Tea - Berkeley

Members in attendance:

Rachel Gilgoff- Pediatrician, Oakland Children’s Hospital

Stephanie Guinosso- John Hopkins Ph.D student currently finishing up her Dissertation

Yuko M. Leung: City of Berkeley Public Health Nurse

Jasmine Pettis: Community Manager, ACEsConnection.com

Rachel Gilgoff:

  • Working towards incorporating an ACEs Screening questionnaire asking parents of newborns about their childhood experiences and how those experience may translate into their parenting
  • Looking at the cycle of trauma – potential future research project!
  • A potentially more feasible place to begin with the ACEs Screening tool is the smaller Center for Child Protection Clinic
  • Pediatricians are weary of the extra work
  • Also, what are the next steps if someone were to answer positive to one of the ACE’s questions. There is a need for specific resources & referrals to be available if say someone is in a Domestic Violence situation

Stephanie Guinosso:

  • Working on her dissertation about how harm and trauma impact cognitive development
  • Using a national database for longitudinal studies (to track development over time; includes case studies)
  • Works for ETR Associates – does Resiliency Trainings
  • Attended a Teen Pregnancy conference that discussed Shaming. She made the link that there is similar shaming when talking about ACEs. Sometimes in Public Health we frame things negatively: i.e. if you have an ACE score of nine your chances of getting or doing XYZ increase. Instead of if you have an ACE score of nine here are all the wonderful resources and trauma informed agencies here to help and avoid XYZ.

Yuko M. Leung:

  • Uses the “Mom 2020” Depression Scale
  • Discussed how mom and baby are separate patients instead of being looked at as one

I will be posting what I have so far of the Alameda County Assets Map. If an agency is missing from the list please feel free to add it. Also, if you know a contact person at these agencies please let us know! My last with ACEsConnection is today. I look forward to continuing to be an ACEsConnection advocate in Alameda and Contra Costa County. If you have any questions please feel free to contact any of the other ACEsConnection Community Managers, Alicia St. Andrews or Elizabeth Prewitt or ACEsConnection founder, Jane Stevens.

Thank you!
