Oregon State educators visit Cherokee Point Elementary in San Diego

Oregon State Action group & Trauma Informed Community Schools team

Cherokee Point Elementary in City Heights (San Diego Unified School District) hosted 12 educators from Oregon on Friday, March 11th.  The superintendents, principals and teachers spent the day with Principal Godwin Higa and Resource Specialist Patty Wallach to talk about the school becoming trauma informed, and how it functions.

They visited classrooms and had lunch with the students, then met with Dr. Audrey Hokoda, Child, Development Department, San Diego State University and Dana Brown to learn how parents and youth are involved in the trauma-informed practices. A group of the school's parent leaders also did a presentation for the Oregon educators.

Attached is a presentation put together for the visitors from Oregon to review the highlights of how children, youth and families are transformed when learning about and understanding the impact of toxic stress and trauma, and how they build resilience and empathy muscles.

Thank you Julie! Excitedly, please know I look forward to meeting you and your ATN team this week.  What an exhilarating juncture we are all at with influencing trauma informed systems change with policy and decision makers.  Thank you Julie for everything you and your team does for so many parents and their children.

Hurrah Cherokee Point, Godwin Higa and Dana Brown!  How wonderful to share your program design and successes!  Every school in America needs this.  Can't wait to meet you this week Dana...and learn more about all you're doing!

Thank you Dr. Felitti.  Your graciousness is tremendously appreciated.

Your groundbreaking research is breaking through endemically diseased roots in our society and the transformation of the children, youth and families is bringing hope and healing to our communities.
