Restorative Justice in Schools: Trauma-Informed Approaches to Increasing Protective Health Factors for Girls of Color

Thursday July 1st 12 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. EST

2021-04-29 (2)

Empowering girls of color and supporting their educational success is not simply an issue of educational equity. It is a matter of health justice.

Join us for a conversation about the possibilities for and potential uses of restorative justice practices in schools with Thalia González, a nationally renowned scholar in the field of school-based restorative justice.

Restorative practices are usually thought of as a response to harm, but they can also be used proactively to build the strength of school communities. New research released by the Initiative on Gender Justice & Opportunity in May finds that participation in non-disciplinary restorative justice practices is associated with increased protective health factors for girls of color. This includes benefits to school connectedness, peer relationships, connections to family, sense of safety and positive school climate, social and emotional literacy skills, and mental health, resilience, and empowerment. All of these outcomes increase the likelihood of students' emotional well-being, school engagement, and academic success — and are especially critical as schools reopen and learning communities reconnect.

Join us at 12:30 pm Eastern on Thursday July 1, 2021, to discuss what non-disciplinary restorative practices are, our research about how they support health equity for girls of color, and the potential for implementation and development of such practices in schools of all types.

Event access information will be sent to attendees 24 hours prior to the event.

A good-faith effort will be made to fulfill accommodation requests related to a disability. A captioned version of this presentation will also be made available shortly following the event.
