Valencia College to Host College and Community Discussion about Domestic Violence

The Peace and Justice Institute at Valencia College will host award-winning author Rachel Louise Snyder for a community-wide exploration of domestic violence, its roots and potential solutions, as part of PJI’s Conversation on Justice (COJ) conference, which will be held Jan. 24-27.

The conference will feature two primary events on Jan. 26, plus several related events throughout the four-day conference. The guest speaker is Rachel Louise Snyder, American University professor and author of the award-winning book, “No Visible Bruises: What We Don't Know About Domestic Violence Can Kill Us.”

In the book – named one of the New York Times’ top 10 books of the year in 2019 -- Snyder combines the skills of an investigative reporter with empathy drawn from her personal experience with domestic violence. When she was nine, her mother died. Her father remarried two months later and began routinely beating his daughter to rein her in. “Violence swirled around me,” she writes. The book features the voices of women, their families and the men who have abused and killed their partners and family members.

While PJI’s annual Conversation on Justice addresses many issues, this year PJI is devoting special attention to domestic violence. Discussions will include the work of Central Florida’s major shelters, how men are socialized, and alternative treatments and judicial resolutions for abusers.

Note: Because of the rise in COVID-19 cases, all conference events will be virtual. To watch or participate in film screenings, panel discussions and workshops, please use the registration links below. Participants are asked to register in advance; PJI will send Zoom links for sessions to participants’ email addresses.
