The Peace and Justice Institute (PJI) invites you to the PJI Academy for Teachers taking place this summer.
Originally, the academy was set up as a series of face-to-face sessions. However, since COVID-19 caused campus closures, participants will now collaborate and learn in an online setting.
“Through a highly engaged learning experience, the Academy for Teachers transforms the inner life of the teacher, leading to outer changes with the curriculum and pedagogy,” said Rachel Allen, director, Peace and Justice Institute. “With COVID-19 impacting us all, this summer provides a special emphasis on being trauma-sensitive and resilient, helping to strengthen us as educators, and in turn, skillfully supporting our students.”
The PJI Academy for Teachers extends an invitation to all educators who are leading the way for students and teachers to become resilient, lifelong learners. The academy is open to all educators from Pre-K through higher education.
At the PJI Academy, participants will be introduced to a set of pedagogical tools and theoretical frameworks that help create a peaceable and inclusive classroom, focusing on our Principles for How We Treat Each Other.
Participants will also explore their own identity, hidden bias and life experiences to discover the impact these may have on the selection and delivery of curriculum and teacher/student relationships.
The teacher academy model is based upon 10 years of collaboration with leading scholars in the field of peace studies including Dr. Peggy McIntosh, Dr. Beverly Tatum, Dr. George Lopez, Dr. Michael Nagler, Elaine Sullivan, Emily Style and Dr. Alma Abdul-Hadi Jadallah.
The academy pairs their insights and practices with local PJI experts to create professional development opportunities for all to build resilient communities in our schools, institutions and families.
You may choose from one of two sessions:
Session I (Registration is open until Wednesday, June 17, 2020)
Date and Times:
- Sunday, June 21, 2020 – 7 – 8:30 p.m.
- Monday, June 22 – Friday 26, 2020 – 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Location: Zoom
Session II (Registration is open until Wednesday, July 8, 2020)
Dates and Times:
- Sunday, July 12, 2020 – 7 – 8:30 p.m.
- Monday, July 13 – Friday, July 17, 2020 – 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
