New Trauma-Informed Workshop in Central Florida

In 2021, the data and metrics team of the CRC Network conducted a needs assessment to determine what the priority would be for the network after producing the Why PACEs Matter Workshop. To date, Why PACEs Matter has reached over 1600 individuals in Central Florida. The survey was published in the PJI Journal (Volume 12, Number 2) and in it, respondents expressed that the next big project for the network would be to develop a trauma informed workshop.

Between June and September 2022, an advisory committee was convened and the workshop development and review was administered. By December of 2022, the slides were submitted for graphic design.

On February 21, 2023, the Peace and Justice Institute's CRC Network, in partnership with the Orange County Citizens’ Commission for Children, piloted the Why Being Trauma Informed Matters training to a group of about 100 providers. The 3 hour training was sponsored by Orlando Health. It covered the following learning outcomes:

  • Provide an overview of key points from Why PACEs Matter
  • Examine the three E’s conceptualization of trauma
  • Understand the 4 R’s of a trauma-informed approach
  • Explain the 6 key principles of trauma-informed care
  • Define the stages of development in becoming trauma-informed
  • Examine various implementation domains for a trauma-informed approach

In the room there were professionals from the fields of: mental health, early childhood, social work, foster care, housing and poverty support, substance use treatment, faith based organizations, victims’ advocacy, parenting support, education, immigrant services, and more.

In the post-workshop assessment, respondents expressed an overwhelmingly positive response.

One participant emailed the PJI team with the following:

“I am grateful .. for the amazing presentation you gave on Tuesday! By all accounts, it was one of the greatest presentations I have attended in a long time.. remarkable job!”

Others shared in the assessment:

“I only wish it were longer! I don’t want to leave”

“Loved how interactive it was!”

“I felt a lot of peer support talking with others”

Additional Data (from the assessment):

  • 85/93 respondents thought the content was either extremely/very useful and relevant*
  • 89/93 respondents thought the knowledge and skills learned will help them in their job*
  • 90/93 thought the knowledge and skills learned would help them in their personal life*

*One participant shared after the workshop that they accidentally messed up on the assessment by clicking on the negative response instead of positive response for multiple questions. Order of answer choices will be fixed to avoid this mess up for future surveys.

The workshop will be offered for free to the community a few times per year. An announcement will be shared in the coming months about the first open offering. In addition, come Fall, organizations and companies will have the opportunity to contract with PJI an offering for their staff.
